Mann, Jack and Tina – are the directors and operators of the Franchise. This means you get 100% personal service from the team who are also the decision makers. We are passionate about helping you grow your business and improve your bottom line and the value of your business. Jack and Mann also own 15 Thirsty Liquor and Black Bull Liquor retail stores themselves, meaning they understand the challenges of the retailer and can offer suggestions and make improvements quickly. They have a wealth of experience between them from setting up brand new shops, introducing a new brand to the NZ marketplace, to running successful retail and wholesaling businesses. Their hands on expertise and knowledge is used to help many store owners in our Group.
Tina Govan | MANAGING DIRECTOR
Tina has been with Thirsty Liquor since April 2013 and has seen the growth of store numbers double over the last 5 years. Prior to joining Thirsty Liquor, Tina worked at Independent Liquor for 5 years as Commercial Manager so has over 10 years extensive liquor industry experience. She has taken the learnings from working for a Supplier to help explore and capitalise on opportunities for the Thirsty Liquor Group.
Born on the North Shore in Auckland, Tina studied at Auckland University and has a Bachelor of Commerce degree, majoring in Marketing. She continued her studies to become a fully qualified member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand (CA ANZ). Tina has had varying senior, management roles in a number of multinational corporations including Griffins, Philip Morris,Black & Decker and Turners & Growers, to name a few. She has also been in retail with her family and successfully owned and operated fruit and vegetable retail shops on the North Shore in Auckland.
Tina has a very practical but professional management style and is fully committed to seeing the Group continue to grow in both store numbers and volumes. She takes a personal interest in each store owner and is passionate about showing new members how Thirsty Liquor can help store owners grow their sales turnover and improve their bottom line profitability.
Jack (Inderjit) Kalkat | DIRECTOR
Jack joined the Thirsty Liquor Head office business in June 2015, but has over 20 years of experience in retail liquor and therefore has a good understanding of stores’ requirements. He has developed strong, personal relationships with key players in the industry over the years. Jack is very passionate about the Thirsty Liquor brand and enjoys working with retailers, with the common goal of taking this franchise to the next level.
He is an active leader in the community and is involved in various projects like ‘Say No To Crime’ (a South Auckland crime prevention initiative). Jack gets involved in religious functions at Gurudwara Mandir (Indian church) and is a generous supporter of a number of charities - he has a genuine passion for helping people in need. He also likes to be involved in the Indian entertainment industry and flies our Thirsty Liquor flag high at many local concerts and sports events! Jack used to be a competitive Kabbadi player and still takes an active role in organising tournaments and training the young players. He enjoys playing rugby league and is a devoted supporter of The Warriors.
Jack currently owns 4 Thirsty Liquor retail shops in South Auckland and runs a significant liquor wholesaling business in Manurewa.
Harinder Mann | DIRECTOR
Mann joined the Thirsty Liquor Head office business in June 2015 and brought the Black Bull Liquor brand to the Group. Over the last three years Black Bull Liquor has undergone a rebrand and see rapid growth from the original 6 stores to now having 45 retail stores.
Mann personally now owns 10 BBL Stores in Hamilton and Hawkes Bay. Mann has an MBA (Masters in Business Administration) and originally started his career in New Zealand with music video shops and internet cafes.
Mann brings a wealth of knowledge to the group from the retail sector and has a ground floor knowledge of day to day business operations so has the information and facts to challenge suppliers. Mann is an asset when negotiating trading terms with suppliers annually.
Shane Whitley | NATIONAL OPERATIONS MANAGER
Shane believes Thirsty Liquor has a simple program that differentiates it from other banner groups in the marketplace. There is no need to create complex layers of operating procedures or complicated structures for retailers to follow. The group is here to help stores with marketing, advertising and getting fair deals from suppliers. Thirsty Liquor does not tell store owners how to run their businesses but provide a support system to help them achieve their goals.
Shane joined the liquor industry 10 years ago after spending 12 years in the grocery trade. His grocery journey started with Mainland Products limited who was purchased by Kiwi Dairys who in turn was integrated in the dairy mega merger into Fonterra. He transitioned through this to Goodman Fielder where he ran the Metro Auckland field sales team gaining vast experience in the managing and recruiting of staff. Shane studied at Massey University where he gained a Bachelor of Agriculture Degree majoring in Rural Valuation. This broad and extensive knowledge of numbers served him well upon joining Independent Liquor where he started repping through various company branding initiatives (Momentum Brands, BRB), until he took up the Regional managers position running the Auckland RTD field sales and merchandising team.
Having competed very competitively in 4 coast to coast multi –sport events Shane turned that competitive nature to car racing, where he’s currently campaigning a Thirsty Liquor sponsored 600HP Falcon winning numerous events, and recently being crowned as GTRNZ GT3 champ.
